Head-Royce School
Teaching Fellow-Middle School Math
Founded in 1887, Head-Royce is an independent, non-denominational,
coeducational college-preparatory, K-12 school, which offers a
challenging educational program to educate the whole child. The
mission of the School is to inspire in our students a life-long
love of learning and pursuit of academic excellence, to promote
understanding of and respect for the diversity that makes our
society strong, and to encourage active and responsible citizenship.
More information about the School can be obtained on our website:
www.headroyce.org.
Responsibilities
The Head-Royce School Teaching Fellow Program is designed to help
address the national need to train new, outstanding independent
school teachers, especially teachers of color. We are looking
for college graduates who have an interest in teaching as a career.
We are specifically interested in candidates with distinctive
academic credentials, excellent communication skills, and a desire
to work with adolescents.
For 2010-11, we seek a full-time Teaching Fellow to teach two
sections of math at the Middle School level (7th grade Problem
Solving and 8th grade Algebra).
Teaching Fellows will
•teach two classes with all responsibilities for preparation,
grading and parent communication
•meet weekly with grade level teachers for planning and

at an orientation for teachers new to Head-Royce School is required.
Teaching fellows are expected to participate in the full school
day. They will arrive by 8:00 am and stay beyond the school day
as needed, but generally not later than 4:00 pm. The exception
to this is the afternoon division and faculty meetings which all
faculty attend; these meetings end at 5:00 p.m.
The Teaching Fellow Program at Head-Royce is intended to be a
one-year opportunity. The main goal of the program is to train
beginning teachers, giving them the experience they need to enter
the teaching profession. Because the school recognizes that individual
situations will vary there may be the opportunity to extend the
position into a second year, but there must be mutual agreement
between the School and the fellow that this is the best course
of action.
Teaching Fellows are paid on a scale competitive with other Bay
Area independent schools. A second-year fellow may expect to receive
a “cost of living” increase in salary from year one
to year two. The Head-Royce School Teaching Fellow Program is
designed to prepare participants for positions in other independent
and public schools. Should a position become available at the
School for a full-time teacher, an intern teacher who wishes to
be considered for employment must participate in the regular interview
process required of all prospective teacher candidates.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a BA or graduate degree.
A passion for working with Middle students is also desirable.
Salary/Benefits
Head-Royce is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding
employees through a competitive compensation package. The School
